Some background:

The D/L method of resetting targets in rain-affected one-day cricket matches was first tested successfully by the International Cricket Council, the England & Wales Cricket Board and the Zimbabwe Cricket Union, during 1997.

Since then, the DL system has been revised a number of times. Currently, there are two systems available: the Standard Edition and the Professional Edition. The Standard Edition uses a fixed table of "resources" (wickets remaining and overs available) to calculate the targets for the remaining overs, whereas the Professional Edition uses different tables of resources. The particular table that is fixed for the match depends on runs scored (as opposed to resources used up) in the first innings.

The decision on which edition should be used is for the cricket authority which runs the particular competition. At present (since 1 October 2003) the Professional Edition is only used in one-day international matches, run under the ICC playing regulations. The Professional edition can only be operated by running the computer software CODA, which is not yet available for sale to the general public.

Thus, ideally, we would need to cater for both systems. The Standard Edition is fairly easy to apply, as it relies on only one resource table. For the Professional Edition, however, we would need to obtain the complete set of tables/calculations in order to compile the applicable resource table once the first innings total runs are available. The Palm is the perfect mechansim to handle this complexity, but the copyright and royalty requirements may make the price too expensive?

Thorny issues to discuss here!

I had been wondering about that possibility - it would be ideal to have it all in the one package!
