Pat and Colleen Culpan, scoring at Valley Cricket Club
Pat Culpan has been scoring 1st Grade, 1st Class and International cricket since the age of 14 in 1977. The highlights of his scoring career have been touring Sharjah, England and Ireland with New Zealand in 1990, touring England with Sri Lanka in 1990 and acting as scorer/liaison for Bermuda at the ICC Trophy in Kenya in 1994. He has also been involved with grade cricket in Gisborne (his home city in NZ), Auckland, London (Middlesex), Nairobi and currently Brisbane.

The Valley District Cricket Club in Brisbane is Pat's "home from home". It is the largest club in Australia, fielding 14 senior teams and over 50 junior teams. The club's past and current membership comprises a number of current and former international cricketers such as Allan Border, Matthew Hayden, Kepler Wessels, Stuart Law and Greg Ritchie. Pat's roles at the club are: member of the executive committee, 1st Grade scorer, club statistician, historian (the club was established in 1897), and website director.

Pat is employed as Director of Internal Audit for the Queensland State Health Department, which has approximately 65,000 employees spread across the vast state of Queensland. His wife Colleen is very supportive of cricket and in fact runs the club canteen/bar when Valley's 1st Team are at home.

Pat also scores a number of games on line with ball by ball text commentary for Cricinfo. To give an idea as to the ease of picking up how to score using the Palm Cricket software, Pat gave Colleen a brief 10 minute lesson before an Australia v India one day international at The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground) where he was scoring for Cricinfo. They had decided to use the Palm rather than a paper base, in case of system failure on line. With the 10 minute lesson, Colleen completed the match with no errors or discrepancies.

Pat's handheld device of choice is a Palm Tungsten T5, which only gives about 4 hours power. However, using a battery extender (which he bought on eBay) powered with 4 x AA batteries , he can score even the longest match without any problems. He is soon to upgrade to a Palm LifeDrive with a 4 Gb disk drive and a 416 Mhz processor. Valley Cricket Club uses Cricket Statz Pro with all current players historical data included, making career stats easy to produce. Pat says that he can go home after the cricket match, hotsync the Palm with his notebook computer and have the scoresheet, season stats and career stats published on the website, within 15 minutes.

Palmcricket is the best product Pat has come across for scorers at all levels of the game, as it saves so much time and agony. He has been using Palmcricket continuously since 2002. As the most experienced scorer on the panel, Pat plays a vital role in advising Multi-Media Publications on correct international scoring conventions. His insight and willingness to test the deeper labyrinths within Palmcricket (in many a bug-hunt that extended into the early hours of the morning) have contributed immeasurably to the product's long-term stability and evolution.
